This Too Shall Pass

Stay the course, despite what lies ahead!

“This too shall pass,” is an ancient Persian saying that originated from Sufi poets. It first appeared in literature in the 13th century and has since been translated to many languages. Personally, I am very fond of this expression, especially in times of crisis, because of its soothing nuance. Many have found this simple phrase to be useful in overcoming the brain’s natural reaction to a crisis.

As you know, the kanji for crisis consists of two characters; the first, danger, and the second opportunity. In the short term, a crisis raises awareness of an issue and prepares us for potential danger. This is part of a fight-or-flight response mechanism of the brain. Despite its importance for survival, it can also cause harm. Ironically, the stress derived from worry may be more harmful than the thing we are trying to avoid.

To be sure, we need to take precautions to stay safe, such as washing hands often, wearing a mask etc., but remember that the best defense is often a strong offense. Therefore, to combat whatever winter has in store, eat healthily, sleep well, and laugh often to build the strongest immune system possible.

Wishing you perfect health and happiness.
