You may have noticed that the daylight hours are getting longer as we head toward spring. A new month is upon us and the cherry blossoms will soon be in full bloom.
A common phrase in English when you would like to say something encouraging to a friend in times of trouble, is simply “brighter days ahead.” This figurative expression is a great way to pick someone up when they’re feeling down. However, it is also true in a literal sense.
As you know, the amount of daylight increases until it reaches a peak around June 20. March 20 marks a time when daylight and darkness are equal, which is called spring equinox. Why is this important? Well, sunlight is not just something to help the cherry blossoms grow, it has great health benefits for all of us.
Sunlight can reduce stress, but maybe that’s just a part of being outside when we are not thinking about work. It is true, however, that sunlight activates vitamin D, which will help keep your teeth, bones and muscles healthy. In fact, daylight has an impact on overall health and will give you a stronger immune system, which is exactly what everyone needs these days.
If you are someone who doesn’t like the midday sun, here’s a thought. Every day, as we move toward summer, the sun rises earlier so why not do the same and go for an early morning walk to kick off your day the streets are quiet and it is truly a wonderful thing to witness the world waking up. Moreover, starting your day with sunshine and positive thoughts means that the positive energy is more likely to continue throughout the day. Yes, spring is just around the corner, but better physical and mental health can come even sooner than that if you take advantage of the extra daylight starting today. Remember that even tiny tweaks can have a big impact on your life.
Wishing you health and happiness, always.
